She began her training in Washington DC. Her interest in muralism brought her to Mexico, where she continued her education and obtained financing to carry out her work. Thus, he has exhibited throughout the Republic and she currently has her atelier in Mexico City. Always passionate about abstraction and figuration, Mary has explored spirituality, nature and everyday life through painting, sculpture and object art.
Biography
Born in Providence, RI, United States. Stuart studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. and then at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. Since 1972, after studying and painting in Paris, she continues producing her work in Tunisia. In 1976 she received the Lincoln-Juarez scholarship from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico to study mural painting at the National School of Painting, Engraving and Sculpture “La Esmeralda” for three years. When she finished, in 1979, she studied engraving at the Molino de Santo Domingo in Mexico City. In the year 2000 she became part of the National System of Art Creators (FONCA) with a monthly grant which she held until 2006. In 2012 she received it again for another three years.
Throughout her artistic career Stuart has developed her work in a figurative and abstract way, based on questions that start from the spirituality, the nature, the aesthetic beauty and the daily life, using different artistic techniques. She has elaborated works with oil painting, gouache painting, engraving, bronze sculpturing, collage with paper and plaster, clay masonry, and carpet design (woven in Oaxaca) amongst others; In addition, she has produced a wide series of art objects inspired by fans, elaborated from organic objects, natural materials and amulets.
Her work has been exhibited nationally in several states of the Mexican Republic including Mexico City, Aguascalientes, Querétaro, Oaxaca, Guanajuato and Baja California. She has also developed her career internationally in countries such as the United States, Korea, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Brussels, Switzerland, and Australia. Amongst the spaces where her work has been exhibited, the following stand out: Modern Art Museum (Mexico City), Oaxaca Museum of Contemporary Art (Oaxaca, Mexico), Mexican Art Gallery (Mexico City), OMR Gallery (Mexico City) , Banamex Gallery (Mexico City), Bancomer Cultural Foundation (Mexico City), José Luís Cuevas Museum (Mexico City), ZONA MACO (Mexico City), Susan Blanchard Gallery (New York), Casa de España (Miami), Espace Medicis (Brussels) and Rahn Gallery (Switzerland).
Mary Stuart currently lives and develops her artistic projects from her studio in Mexico City, producing large oil paintings on linen, art object and bronze sculpture mainly.
